STARS ALIGN, 2020, 32" X 40" oil on canvas

Stars Align is composed of two pictures, the top being of water dripping down a pane of glass and the lower is a black and white photo taken during the civil war of a skeleton decomposing in a bed of leaves and twigs. In the center is a band of pure color, similar to the band of color that exists as visible light along the electromagnetic spectrum. The title “Stars Align” comes from the stories of ancient peoples using the stars to create mythologies from the constellational figures they imagined in connecting the celestial “dots”.  Similarly, the shapes of the water in some ways seem to mimic the shapes of the grass and the bones. While the images are devoid of color, their dividing boundary exists as pure color and serves as a reflection on the idea of color itself, of light and of the senses that we use to make sense of the world around us.
