SKULL, 2021, 64" X 64" oil on canvas

The fragmented image of a skull exists in the center. A bright, surreal orange glows in the background with a tear at the top left corner, revealing near blackness. Around the central image exists four panels, all coalescing to the center of a one-point perspective. On the right is the picture of flowers for sale in a market, with the poster of a coastal city in the background. On the bottom panel, an array of flowering vines and leaves. On the left is the negative of a house on a grassy hillside, and above is the image of a school bus stopping for a parent nearby. These four images were all taken by me at various points on a road trip from New York to New Orleans. To me they all represent instantaneous moments of time in life, scenes you might see everyday and never notice. However, with their jarring positioning around the skull, these images become surreal and profound as a reminder of the relativity of time and space in which we live, of the finitude of our existence and of the awe inspired by reflecting on one’s life in totality.
