Velma Hunt is a reflection on the journey of the individual on his or her way through life. Velma from the TV show Scooby Doo is a character who is compelled to solve mysteries but who leans more to the analytic approach to discovery. In this image, she straddles between two ambiguous worlds: does she move from the dark gloomy basement? Although a flowering field certainly seems more inviting, the dark rainclouds still linger on the horizon even though a rainbow is apparently starting to shine. She also seems to be startled as a hand grips her from her shoulder, pulling her back towards the musty room. Velma’s predicament is complex and challenging. However, bright fruits and a passionate kiss border the conflict. These images to me represent images of abundance and beauty, of life generating processes and of growth and love renewed. These are the revivifying forces as symbolized in the water depicted on the outer edges of the painting. Although doubt and anxiety exist as a perpetual feature of life, the simple beauties of art nature and intimate connection have the ability to restore and heal.
